Word For The Day ~Cheryl

“Order my steps by Your word, and let no iniquity have dominion over me.” (Psalm 119:133)

So we’ve come to realize that all of us are not exactly Martha Stewarts where our homes are concerned. With church, work, soccer practices, school plays, etc., thoughts of making homemade pastry crusts for individual pot pies or growing our own herbs and spices for cooking may be somewhat on the insane side. However, as Christians our homes should be a refuge from the clamor of the outside world, both spiritually and naturally. So, how do we fit order in our daily schedules?

1. Use extra minutes wisely. Instead of sitting on the couch another 5 minutes after the evening news, allot that 5 minutes to re-organizing a drawer. If you don’t need what’s in there, throw it out. Avoid wasting time deciding what you really need and what you don’t. If it hasn’t been used in the recent past, toss it or give it away. Minutes are precious and can be lifesavers if we’ll use them wisely.

2. Do a run through of your house before going to sleep at night. One quick walk-through of picking up toys, shoes, etc. will save you an entire day’s work on the weekend. It will also help create a more welcoming environment the next morning so that your focus can be on your daily devotional rather than the things that need to be done around the house.

3. Collect donation items on an ongoing basis. Keep a small box with a lid on it where you can put things that need to be given away. If you’re in doubt, throw it out. After a little time, if you haven’t needed what’s in the box, take it to a local charity and give it away.

4. See your cleaning and organization as strategies for creating a peaceful and productive home. Messiness manifests in ongoing clutter and disorganization. Keeping a home orderly has biblical support. It can be a way of honoring your mate, creating a spiritual heritage for our children, or by allowing you to concentrate on spiritual things. Without the piles, life doesn’t seem so out of control. As a family, you’ll be able to enjoy the home and time that God has given to you.
